2010 Federal Contracts by State

The federal government paid contractors a total of $538 billion in fiscal 2010 for such disparate goods and services as building maintenance, fighter jets and raw silver for the U.S. mint.

Geographically, these federal contract dollars were most heavily concentrated in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area, home to major contractors such as Lockheed Martin Corp. and Northrop Grumman Corp., as well as the federal government itself. Other hot spots include Connecticut, where General Dynamics Corp. builds the Virginia-class submarine, and New Mexico, home to the Los Alamos government research lab.

2010 Federal Contracts by Agency

The Pentagon overwhelms the world of federal contracting, spending more than twice the combined amount for the rest of the government. Click on the entries below to see more information on each agency’s fiscal 2010 contract spending.

NOTES: For the map, a contract is assigned to a state based on where the contract was carried out, not where the contracting company is headquartered. The agency breakdown shows which division of the government paid for the contract, which occasionally differs from the agency that commissioned the contract. All figures are for fiscal 2010.
